A few months after I started blogging I stumbled across a course to become a freelance SEO copywriter… and it was free! It was the first time I’d heard about SEO copywriting or even considered freelance writing as a way to earn extra cash. So I signed up at InkwellEditorial.com to find out more about how to become an SEO copywriter.
Well, as it turns out, SEO writing isn’t as technical as it sounds. You don’t need a degree or even tons of experience to be successful at it. Just a computer, the internet, and a willingness to learn.
If you’ve ever considered freelance writing or even if you’re simply looking for a way to make some extra money, keep reading to find out more about how you can become a freelance SEO copywriter.
What is SEO Copywriting
SEO is the acronym for Search Engine Optimization. SEO writing is simply writing a piece of content or article in a way that helps search engines, like Google, categorize content on the internet. Then when someone like you and me searches for it we can find the most relevant info quickly.
For example, if you were to Google “what is SEO writing”, the first (non-paid) results you see would be the ones that are optimized using SEO specifically for that particular search.
Is There a Demand for SEO Copywriting
More and more companies are realizing that in order to stay competitive they need to establish an online presence. To do this, they release various types of web content such as blog posts, articles, social media posts, infographics, etc.
Obviously, a company will want that when a person searches for a topic related to their company, that content with information about their business shows up in high in the search results. SEO rules change often so companies always need to keep their sites up to date and refresh the content so that it stays relevant.
This is where an SEO copywriter comes in. Most companies don’t have an in-house team to create this content. So they hire an agency or a freelance copywriter to do the work for them.
As a freelance SEO copywriter, you can offer your services directly to these companies or work through an agency.
What Do I Need to Get Started as a Freelance SEO Copywriter
Well first, I’ll tell you what you DON’T need. You don’t need previous writing experience, a college degree or even an in-depth knowledge of SEO to start SEO writing.
What you do need is a computer and internet service, good research skills and a good grasp of the English language. You don’t need to be a great writer either. SEO writing is much less formal than anything you ever had to write at school and you’ll get better at it with practice.
While you don’t need to have an in-depth knowledge of SEO, you do need to understand the basics. That’s where the free SEO copywriting course comes in.
