See, I have taught you statutes and rules, as the Lord my God commanded me, that you should do them in the land that you are entering to take possession of it. Keep them and do them, for that will be your wisdom and your understanding in the sight of the peoples, who, when they hear all these statutes, will say, ‘Surely this great nation is a wise and understanding people.’ For what great nation is there that has a god so near to it as the Lord our God is to us, whenever we call upon him? And what great nation is there, that has statutes and rules so righteous as all this law that I set before you today?
Deuteronomy 4:5-8 ESV
When the Israelites left Egypt, God had to teach them how to worship Him correctly. They knew how to worship the gods of Egypt. The worship of the gods in Canaan would be very similar. God wanted them to understand that He didn’t want to be worshiped that way. He wanted them to do it differently.
So He was saying, “Look, this is what you do now. This is how you have learned to worship the gods of the land that you lived in, but what I want to teach you is what true worship to the only true God really looks like. This is how I want you to worship me.”
So He was taking their pagan rituals and showing them the correct way to worship Him; a different way.
In Deuteronomy 4:5-5, Moses is telling the Israelites how they need to act when they get into the land of Canaan and how the people of the land will admire them because they have a God that does things differently.
God wants to teach you to do things differently. If you’re like me, you’ve bought a lot of courses or books or followed a lot of thought leaders. Many of their blueprints and strategies are good.
But sometimes God will say, I don’t want you to do exactly what they did. What if you tried it this way? And His way might be completely different from “the way it has always been done” or the way you have always known. It may go completely against what worked for that thought leader or guru.
But remember, He is “Creator God”.
He can invent completely new solutions or He can take a known solution and make it better. Trust Him. He’ll show you how to do it differently. When God shows you how to improve upon a product or a concept, people will come to you and say surely this person is wise and understanding. It gives you influence to advance the Kingdom of God.
